g'day guys,

a mate has a couple of these Polaris turbos lying around and hes going to give them to me, so my thoughts are why build a manifold and build a twin turbo motor.

now i'm unsure as to how i should go about this. i'm not sure that it would even work.

any opinions?
keeping in mind that i have an engine here and the turbos are coming most of the materials i will have lying around, do you think it a worth while undertaking?

cheers
michael

Why not, give it a go lol.

Diesel turbos do tend to have different Compressor and turbine wheel trims, but they are probs not that different. If it was me id give it a trial lol

Cheers Nick

diesel turbos would be a mismatch without question.

how so germy?

i wouldn't mind giving it a go as its not going to cost me much, is there some paticular reasons why i shouldnt try it?

because he says so, thats why.
Didnt you know he's allways right and knows everything.
He's like a 5 year old (acts like one sometimes too)

What you need to do is find some info on that turbo.
Find out the AR ratio's of the turbine and compressor, then you'll have a better idea of how its going to go on the gem motor.
What is the capacity of the deisel motor it came off?

now, in theory, if the turbine is too small, but the compressor is ideally suited, you may need to high flow the wastegate (or fit an external)
But it should come onto boost real early and hold a good usefull power output all the way to redline.
Audi do this on their cars from factory. the turbos are ridiculosly small, but they make amazing power with them.

Yeah righto,

So i had a turbo from a perkins diesel on my G161z (bog stock) - T04 to be exact. Apart from lag it works awesome. Had to take it off only because i'm particular with things an wanted a rebuild. Also the waste gate was a dodgie JDM unit so i will look and changing the config for the new g200 i'm setting up.

But still put back on the piazza kit, and it feels like shes choking on it.

My 2 cents.

p.s. why don't you take em to a turbo joint have spun upto get the cfm pressure ratio etc etc. Some diesel turbos will suit petrol engines, its a matter of a/r on the exducer side because (from memory) they can be conservative considering the amount of flow they have vs the compressor side. Its to do with v.e. on diesels.

yea, i have a diesel turbo on my 2.8L datto.

Its off a large Perkins stationary motor.
I was able to pull some of the serial numbers and find out it was a Garrett GT3271R

Pretty good for $50 Cool

Ya know it's amusing, Al wrote that comment not because he knows the turbo is right for the application because he can't possibly know that. To start with, what major differences exist in the way diesel and petrol engines meter fuel and air? Diesel engines don't meter air, they have no throttle butterfly like petrol engines do, they meter controlled amounts of fuel to an open flow of air. Diesels take in all the air they can on each and every intake cycle. Try doing that with a petrol engine! Go on I dare you to remove the throttle butterfly.

So I won't have any more to say about it. Al is the QUALIFIED mechanic that knows there is bugger all difference between how a diesel engine and a petrol engine works so obviously diesel turbos are all suitable for petrol engine applications. Funny how two engines that work in such a similar manner can't use each others fuel but swapping anything else is right to go.

way to go 5 year old, isnt it your bed time? big day of school tomorrow?
maybe you'll learn how to defend yourself when the school bully decided to steal your lunch again.
Its ok, just tell them several times its illegal and you'll go to the cops over it.

Where did i say the turbo was suitable?
Where did i mention that it wouldnt have any chance of working because it has a throttle body?
Where did i mention it'd work because it uses petrol instead of deisel?

in fact what i said was

master mechanic who knows more that Pubeinator wrote:

So, looking over what i wrote, it seems that i said it would be beneficial to find out what sizes the turbine and compressor housings were, from that info it may be possible to work out if the turbo could actually be used on a G161 sized motor.
I also mentioned that Audi follow a similar path with their factory turbos (not mentioning the billions in R&D invested) where they use a very small exhaust turbine to maximise velocity and pressure to get the compressor spinning in the minimal amount of time and with the lowest amount of RPMs possible.
This is done by having the ability to vent a large amount of exhaust gas around the turbine. hence my suggestion of mayby having to enlarge and hiflow the internal wastegate to allow that to take place while maintaining an optimal compressor speed.

fact, i DO know more about turbos then you, i have the peice of paper hanging on my wall that says so.
I also have several years of Manufacturer training on various cars that utilise turbocharger technology on most of their lineup, amongst other things.
I have also sucessfully built a specific project aimed at utilising turbos that were 'too small' to get a very low RPM maximum boost output.

so, in response to your next post of dribble, i'll take the opportunity to respond now in advance.

So, off to bed, big school day tomorrow...

No Al. It's you who is behaving like a 5 year old!
You didn't have to remark in the manner you did.
What I said was my perspective on the idea and you could have made your point without it involving your ramble about me being a 5 year old.

Take a look at where it started to fall apart dickhead.

This is an acceptable response

Introducing your comment with this little gem reduced you from someone who is qualified and should probably be listened to to a f*$kwit with attitude who is more interested in big noting himself.

all because I said this:

Mate what topped it for me was the ridiculous reference to some f*#cked up crab hat image....

What's someone with your mechanical aptitude and qualifications doing working in Autobarn anyway? Pay must be SOOO much better than the Holden dealership or the Mazda/Chrysler dealership was offering. Rolling Eyes

What you did was made an unprovoked attack against me for no reason at all Al.

Actually the pay IS a lot better.
Its a lot cleaner work too.
$15k a year better than any thing i would earn as a mech. and it only goes up from there.
I am about to start a course to enable me to move into a $80K a year job, and upwards from there.
As a mech, id be very lucky to get $40k a year

yes, you said deisel turbo's would be a mismach without question.
You were wrong. I suggested some questions that would help to answer the initial question.

so, back to the crabhat,
and it was Audi, Mazda, Chrysler (Alessi motors), Hyundai, Nissan, Honda, Mercedes, Peugeot (Baker motors) Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, Suzuki, Renault (national capital motors)

thanks for the info mate, ill get some specs on them and post them up, like i said im getting them for free so even if it doesnt work it wont have cost me much. im an apprentice mechanic myself, ive asked the boss about this but he doesnt know much about g161z's and adapting diesel turbos.

seems as though another shitfight has started in a thread i posted can you pleeeassse take it to PM guys really
