Suitable for a G180Z or a G180W?

On that subject, does anyone know for sure if the 'Z' and 'W' oil pumps or components of them will interchange?

Not Interchangable

The "Z" oil pump is a gear type driven from the crank at the front of the motor and hangs down into the sump, mounted under the front cover.
The "W" oil pump is a 'tri-chord' rotor that mounts into a different place on the outside of the motor.
The only known part the same for these motors is the left-hand engine mount!

And crank and big end bearings. But yes, the SOHC and DOHC oil pumps are a completely different design.

Are we still in the belief that Gxx0W oil pumps can't be upgraded? I wonder how much it'd cost / if it'd be possible to have someone make one to suit, using an old standard one...

Anything can be improved for a price.

If it were me needing an improved oil pump, I'd be off to an aircraft wreckers and get hold of a two or three stage dry sump oil pump with a remote oil storage tank. You also need a modified sump and do a bit of work to block off the original oil pickup.

Any idea what that'd cost to setup? My understanding of that would be an external pump mounted to the bottom of the sump, feeding around the outside of the block?

I'm just thinking about the notorious cam bearings, I've heard oil flow is one of the prime causes.

The cost would be about the price of buying two spare twin cam engines.
I have just installed one on my race car. I sourced used parts which saved me alot but it is still expensive.
............... NEW .......... USED
Pump .... $1300+....... $600
Tank ....... $500+ ....... $250 (I bought an ex Wayne Gardiner tank.)
Pulleys $100+
Rework sump ? I have an alloy sump which I cut down and had a plate welded on and two fittings.
Hoses are minimum $45 per metre. Fittings start at $25 each. I would say for hoses and fittings $800 at least.

Best option Buy these new pumps and watch you oil gauge. If you keep the engine under 8000 rpm the engine will run for a very long time.
Gem.

Yeah, I'm wanting to hear verification that these are definately 'W' pumps not 'Z' pumps.
